Pink Pony Windows 11×14 $500
This is a restaurant/bar in the Chippewa Hotel on Mackinac Island. Although I’ve not yet stayed in the hotel, the food is super great. If you’re in the area of northern Michigan, check it out! http://www.chippewahotel.com/pink-pony-patio.cfm
This painting will be at Lilacs & Lace on Mackinac Island by next week. You can contact Barb@lilacsandlace.com.
I drove myself nuts today deciding on what to paint next. It’s a simple thing… jeez. I finally decided on another store front since I have some ideas I want to try to add more depth. More paint. More layers. I look back at my older work and now it seems to lack varying tones to me. It’s okay, I’m on it.
Heading out to pick up a friend to have a nice dinner and then go to our new school fundraiser meeting. Looking forward to meeting the new folks! (I guess I”m the new folk… I didn’t want to call them old folks… that would be starting out on the wrong foot.)

Velvet Fudge Shop 16×20 $900
This is my latest… a fudge shop on Mackinac Island. I gave it a good dose of whimsy. I’m shipping this painting to Lilacs & Lace Gallery on Mackinac Island today.
My sister and her husband are in town visiting from SC. We always have fun together… My sister and I even met up with old childhood friends. More than friends actually, our best friends, who also happen to be sisters. It was awesome!
Woods XI 6×8 $250
Woods XII 8×6 $250
These are the two little woodsy scenes from my Mackinac Island photos. They’re framed in wide, distressed gold frames.
I had a great day today with my mom. We ran errands and had lunch. I promised myself I wasn’t going to eat pancakes… I ate pancakes. I suspect willpower issues. I’m on the verge of starting Weight Watchers again. It was a success last year. I know what I should and shouldn’t eat. It’s simple. It’s just that tomorrow is for some reason the best day to start. I just bought the special scale that will measure a fraction of a pound… so you feel successful even if you only lost, I don’t know, what 3 ounces? I think that’s like 3 hours of sleep. I did notice that you weigh considerably less in the morning. Morning is good. I have to make sure I get a good 8 hours in tonight… that’s like, what… a pound? Pardon my math…
Woods X 40x30
Woods X is another painting that I’ve enjoyed so much. It’s a journey and I feel like I’m walking through the trees and stumping my toes on the roots seeking something… not exactly sure what it is. In the process I’m discovering all sorts of things. It’s so awesome. It’s spiritual and wonderful. Maybe at my young age of 36 (okay, not 36. Maybe a bit more…. 42? Nope. Not that either. Anyway, no matter…) the point is I’m getting deep. No nose plugs. Finally. It’s about time.
What’s next? You tell me and we’ll both know… Feed your passions!
The Grand Hotel 16x20 $900
This is my second entry for the art contest on Mackinac Island. I wanted to depict the hotel in all it’s grandeur as a whole… often you can only get part of the building because it’s so massive… and so, so cool.
I found this to be a bit of a struggle. It’s a whole different ball game when I’m painting something just because I want to. If it’s not a commission or for a show and it’s just because the subject grabbed my attention and held it… that is my ideal painting scenario. It’s much less stressful and it goes really fast, being completely intuitive. When I have something to paint that’s for something or somebody specific, that’s a bit more uptight… it’s a slower go and I constantly question myself. The intuitive part keeps getting uninterrupted by doubt and that just messes up the whole deal. I’m worn out really.
If I could bottle that sensation I get when painting freely… I would be a very wealthy gal. Unfortunately, it’s hit or miss until I figure out a way.
Midnight at The Grand Hotel 16x20
This is the walk way leading up to The Grand Hotel. It’s up a pretty steep hill, which is a blast to come down on a bike. This is one of my three entries into the 2012 Mackinac Island Art Exhibition. The Grand Hotel lives up to its name. It is very much grand. It can be difficult to get different views of the Grand because of its size… I wanted to paint it in a different light… I hope I’ve accomplished that. Nothing like a moonlit night with stars in the sky to make your trip up the hill magical. It’s a very interesting hotel with loads of history. At my last visit with my sister and mom, we took the elevator to the 4th floor and then a staircase up another flight to the Cupola Bar. At the very top of Grand Hotel, the Cupola Bar offers a panoramic view of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. I wasn’t sure if we were allowed to be there or not. We weren’t guests in the hotel just visitors having lunch. It felt sneaky and that made it more fun. I know, I’m an adult I swear. Check it out at http:www.grandhotel.com
Woods V 40×30 $1,800
Here’s an updated photo of the painting I posted last time. I knew it looked dark and dreary but I didn’t know how to fix it. I have a bad habit of giving up on computer issues when I get frustrated (which happens about 10 minutes into a problem). I put Photoshop on my new computer and it helped. At least it’s something I’m vaguely familiar with. Photo quality is so important!
Woods VI 40×30 $1,800
I’m so into these woodsy paths! I started something new and totally different today and hopefully I can make a go of it. It’s imperative for me to be “into” my subject or I just don’t paint well. Sometimes I can concentrate and put myself in the right frame of mind and sometimes it’s a no go. I sure wish I could completely control that. Girl Scout cookies help immensely. If I’m not at my best painting and getting frustrated… I can eat one and it erases the negative feelings I’ve been having about my current piece… I can start fresh with a more positive attitude. OMG. I have issues. But for the record, ice cream works too. Just trying to provide useful tools for you all out there… 🙂
